NBC San Diego reports the event honoring Fred Rogers at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido has been canceled. After days of speculation sourrounding the presumably “star-studded” event, organizers pulled the plug on the show. Prince, the multi-talented performer was interviewed on a popular morning radio show on Friday, and appeared to have confirmed his perfomance at the gala. Jeff and Jerr of Star 94.1, spoke with Prince, and posted an announcemnt for listeners to hear the re-play of the intervew this morning at 9 AM. There is an additional announcement on the radio station's webiste informing listeners to tune in Monday at 5 AM for another exclusive intervew with Prince.
Some blogs and fan sites claimed the voice on the radio interview did not sound like the famous singer, and that it could possibly be a professional impersonator. The concert information online page for the Children's Hero Awards mentioned impersonators as part of the evenings entertainment:
“You are invited to celebrate the life of Mister Rogers on May 31, 2009, at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, California.
During a live taping and concert, The Children’s Media Foundation will present the 2009 Children’s Hero Award to Fred Rogers in recognition of 40 years of serving children as host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
Join a live studio audience along with special celebrity performers and impersonators for the taping of this ceremony and event.“
Phone calls went out today alerting ticket holders about the gala's cancellation. Refunds for ticket cost and fees will be issued.
