The 33rd annual Art Alive is the Museum’s only annual fundraiser, and features over 120 floral designers who will transform famous works of art from The San Diego Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection into exquisite floral displays.

As the Museum’s signature fundraiser and a San Diego tradition, Art Alive 2014 brings works of art to life in a unique, vibrant, and beautiful way during three days of celebrations from April 11-13, 2014

Throughout the Art Alive weekend, guests will be able to enjoy the floral interpretations, floral lectures, workshops and the family-friendly Garden of Activities, where kids can make flowers from art materials, participate in a Museum-wide flower hunt, and read nature-inspired stories. Admission is free for museum members, $20 for nonmembers, $5 for youth age 7 to 17 and free for children 6 and under. The schedule of events is listed below for your convenience.

Bloom Bash

Friday, April 11, 7:00 p.m. – Midnight Featuring culinary creations from San Diego’s top restaurants and chefs, live music, interactive entertainment, and one-of-a-kind floral interpretations of famous works of art, BLOOM BASH  is the new Opening Celebration for Art Alive 2014. Enjoy an exclusive viewing of this year’s floral exhibition, and stay late to meet and mingle with fellow floral enthusiasts, Art Alive Premiere Patrons, Honorary and Steering Committee members, and participating floral designers. Tickets to the BLOOM BASH are $200 for members and $250 for nonmembers.

Garden of Activities 

Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13, Noon – 4:00 p.m.  Great for families, the Garden of Activities features a Museum-wide flower hunt, a children’s reading area complete with nature-inspired stories, and a variety of floral-inspired projects designed for children and families to enjoy together. Activities are free after Art Alive floral exhibition general admission.

Floral Lecture: Fleurs

Saturday, April 12, 11:00 a.m.

Renowned Contemporary artist Jennifer Steinkamp will speak on her work and the theme of fleurs. Juxtaposing the organic and inorganic, the real and unreal, Steinkamp’s work reflects upon the increasing synthesis of our real and virtual worlds. Named the “millennial American heir to our two great flower painters, Georgia O’Keeffe… and Andy Warhol,” by Los Angeles Times art critic Christopher Knight, she has been recognized internationally for her breathtaking installations of computer-generated projected imagery, and has shown locally at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD). Tickets to the Floral Lecture are $40 for The San Diego Museum of Art and MCASD members, $60 for nonmembers.

Floral Masterclass: Manicured European Garden

Sunday, April 13, 10:00 a.m.

Design topiaries with roses and manicured boxwood hedges inspired by the Moorish garden of Alhambra and the Art Alive 2014 Rotunda Design. This workshop will be led by local floral designer Tam Ashworth of Isari Flower Studio & Event Design in Solana Beach. Ashworth is a longtime Art Alive floral artist that has worked as a florist with the Four Seasons in Los Angeles, Four Seasons Resort, Aviara and more. All levels of floral design experience are welcome. Tickets to the Floral Masterclass are $100 for members and $125 for nonmembers.
