The Police and San Diego Reunite

Sting and The Police were back in town after a twenty five year absence. I was lucky to be at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />San Diego State University in 1983 when The Police were last here, and that event left a lasting impression on me. Sting and the band looked and sounded a bit different this time, but still delivered a very memorable performance. The concert-goers, however, behaved much the same as they did twenty five years ago; I'm not referring to the loud singing or uncoordinated dance moves in the seats, but to the noxious fumes emanating from the audience which were enough to coax Sting to joke with the crowd about it. While chatting with the audience Sting stuttered a bit and quipped “what ever you guys are smoking is getting to me.”

The 17,000 plus people at the Cricket Amphitheater in Chula Vista were notably a more mature crowd, and I found myself in a cloud of smoke I hadn't been in for many years. As a mother since 1991, my concert experiences have been the likes of Hilary Duff, Kelly Clarkson, and recently the Jonas Brothers. I was surprised to note that in these times of anti-drug hype, the actual uniformed police present did not react to the herbal essence wafting from the stands. Fortunately, it was a mostly-adult crowd for this great reunion.

Now that my children are older I am slowly becoming mainstream again; in fact, I already have tickets for my next adult concert …  Madonna at PETCO Park! Should I bring a gas mask or blinders for this one?
