On Friday, July 31, Franklin celebrates 47 years with The Peanuts as  it’s first African-American character!

The Peanuts will soon be hitting a 3D screen near you in Fox’s new film “The Peanuts Movie.” To celebrate the date Franklin Armstrong first appeared in The Peanuts as the first African-American character who joined the gang, I’d like to encourage you to post a photo or a tweet Friday, July 31, with the hashtag #HappyBirthdayFranklin

Harriet Glickman, a school teacher wrote a letter to the comic strip’s creator Charles M. Schulz following the death of Martin Luther King urging him that an African American character needed to be added to the popular comic strip.  “Franklin Armstrong” was introduced on July 31, 1968, representing the importance of desegregation.
