Great Scott! The Back To The Future Musical North American Tour was an unexpected thrill ride. The talent is superb, and the electrifying special effects seamlessly transport the audience to 1955 and back to 1985.
As Marty McFly would say, “that’s heavy.” The multi-award winning musical is heavy on the talent. Don Stephenson as Doc Brown, and Caden Brauch as Marty McFly do the heavy lifting in this production.
Don Stephenson (Doc Brown) is a seasoned actor with many stage and TV credits. Broadway: Trouble in Mind, The Producers, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Dracula, Private Lives, Titanic, Parade, By Jeeves, Rock of Ages, Wonderful Town. Encores: Me and My Girl, The Bandwagon, Pardon My English. Off-Broadway: Death Takes A Holiday, Take Me Along, Chess, Two Gentlemen of Verona. Television/Film: “FBI: Most Wanted,” “Law & Order,” “Blacklist,” “The Americans,” “Deception,” “Happy,” “Good Wife,” “30 Rock,” “Glee,” “Ugly Betty,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “L&O: SVU,” “Turn: Washington’s Spies.”
Caden Brauch (Marty McFly) made his national tour debut. He grew up doing professional theater in the greater Seattle area (5th Avenue Theatre, Village Theatre). He is a proud graduate of T. Schreiber’s Acting Conservatory and studied improv with teachers from UCB.
The energy expended on stage is only matched by the 1.21 gigawats it takes to power the amazing special effects of this production. The theater was awash with colorful lights and sound. Giant speakers (as you’d expect) filled the air with familiar songs during the 2 hour and 40 minute show.
I wrote a book, “101 Movies To See Before You Grow Up,” and BTTF is included. In 2015, the year my book was published, CNET interviewed me about the movie. You can read the article and about the significance of 2015 here.
One of the most anticipated moments of this musical was the car. The DeLorean is central to this story and it didn’t disappoint. The moment the time-travel machine made it’s appearance on stage, the audience went wild. After seeing the iconic vehicle, the first thought that comes to mind is, does the machine fly on stage? Find out when Back To The Future The Musical when it flies into your city
You’ll be saying “that’s heavy” too.
Thanks to Broadway San Diego for inviting me to see BTTF. It was the first musical of 2025 for me and I loved it!
