Wicked in San Diego: A Timeless Spectacle
Seeing Wicked again after nearly a decade was like rediscovering an old favorite and realizing it’s even better with time. This Broadway powerhouse, now playing in San Diego, continues to be a mesmerizing experience, with its themes of friendship, power, and the nature of good and evil feeling more relevant than ever.
The music remains as enchanting as the first time I heard it. Songs like Defying Gravity and For Good hit with the same emotional intensity, but Popular, that delightful, bubbly anthem was the earworm that stayed with me for days.
Beyond the music, the production itself is a visual marvel. The sets transport you straight to Oz, with seamless transitions that keep the magic alive from start to finish. Every scene change feels effortless, pulling the audience deeper into the story.
But what truly makes Wicked shine is the sheer talent of its cast. Glinda and Elphaba are absolute scene-stealers, commanding attention with every note and expression. Their dynamic is the heart of the show, balancing humor, drama, and formidable vocals in a way that keeps you captivated.
This time, I had the pleasure of taking my daughter-in-law for Press Night, making the evening even more special. Sharing the experience with her reminded me of why theater is so powerful, it’s not just about the show, but the memories you create together.
If you have the chance to see Wicked in San Diego, don’t miss it. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, the magic never fades.
Wicked is at the San Diego Civic Theater Feb. 5 to March 2, 2025. Tickets https://bit.ly/42NEzJz
