Watching “You Again” brought back the high school drama several of us left behind many years ago: the sense of inadequacy, un-coolness, and the discomfort faced for not belonging to the right group. All these dreadful adolescent feelings from yesteryear are the basis for this funny, yet trite chick flick.
“The movie follows successful PR pro Marni (Kristen Bell) when she heads home for her older brother’s (Jimmy Wolk) wedding and discovers that he’s marrying her high school arch nemesis (Odette Yustman), who’s conveniently forgotten their problematic past. Then the bride’s jet-setting aunt (Sigourney Weaver) bursts in and Marni’s not-so-jet-setting mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes face to face with her own high school rival. The claws come out and old wounds are opened in this crazy comedy that proves that not all rivalries are forever.”
It girl Kristen Bell (Get Him to the Greek) , long-legged Odette Yustman, Betty White, Sigourney Weaver, Jaime Lee Curtis, Cloris Leitchman, and Kristin Chenoweth engage in an hour and thirty minute-long comedy about grown women traumatized by their high school BFFs. The disloyalty, competitiveness, and bullying they endured at the hands of their most trusted frien(enemies)ds push the victims of these juvenile high school bullies to look for vengeful ways to get back at each other, as adults, for past transgressions.
Tired as this catty topic may be, the stellar cast of “You Again” does a good job of letting you get your giggle on as they act like dim youngsters in this laughable film. Curtis and Weaver also show off their fit physiques in this light romantic comedy, and it’s refreshing to see how gracefully they are ageing (Sorry gals. Had to mention the remarkable shape you are both in at this stage of your careers). Even our sweet, yet ubiquitous, Betty White gets her 88 year-old blood boiling in this film – and it’s not only as a result of her own high school nemesis showing up unexpectedly.
“Not This Again” might be a better title for this sappy movie — it's predictable and the dialogue is as immature as the plot line. However, the slapstick humor and dazzling cast provide enough funny scenes to make you chuckle throughout the otherwise un-witty banter. Although “You Again” had a tad too much high school drama for this mama, the laughs I got from this entertaining film did not make me feel it was a complete waste of time.
Then again, I am a chick.
I give this movie 
out of 5 smiles for lack of originality and a few good laughs.
“You Again” will be in theaters September 24th and is rated PG for brief mild language and rude behavior.
